Jayanto Tan was born in a small village in North Sumatra, from a Sumatran Christian mother and a Guandong Taoist father. He now lives on the Gadigal Wangal Country in Sydney’s Inner West. As an immigrant visual artist, his practice blends Eastern and Western mythologies and contextualises them with current events through ceramics, installation and performance.

Jayanto’s work has been shown at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Metro Arts Brisbane, Verge Gallery, Firstdraft, Australia-China Institute for Arts, the 66th Blake Prize, the Fisher’s Ghosts Art Award, the Churchie Emerging Art Prize and The Concourse Chatswood for Lunar New Year Celebrations. He won the 2021 Georges River Sculpture Art Prize. Currently, he is preparing solo shows for Maitland Regional Art Gallery and Atrium Space Incinerator Gallery, Melbourne. Jayanto holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics and Masters of Fine Arts in Drawings from National Art School. He has been awarded grants from City of Sydney, Inner West Council, Diversity Arts Australia, Mittelschule am Aschberg Weisingen, Germany and NAVA. He lives and works in Sydney, Australia and North Sumatra, Indonesia.
