Working from a home studio in Canberra, Fran’s ceramics journey began many years ago. A graduate of ANU School of Art + Design in 2013, casual community teaching work and her design practice complement her art-making. A background in Social Work informs a range of short courses, focused on mindful making for well-being.

Through the lens of her Southern Italian heritage she takes inspiration from the textures and patinas of Europe; fascinated with both it’s archaeology and history. A self-directed residency on the Greek Island of Skopelos in 2017 has had a lasting influence on her work.

Fran’s abstract vessels are made using stiffened, textured clay slabs. Working intuitively, she builds up a sense of history by layering and texturing on the surfaces. These vessels reference both built and natural environments and investigate themes of loss, longing and nostalgia.

Offering space for contemplation, these works explore interiors, whether physical or metaphorical. They ask to be looked into, and for the viewer to look within themselves.

A range of Memory Vessels for containment of funerary ashes and keepsakes is currently in development.
