About

The study of Ceramics at NAS emphasises the ‘hands-on’ experience of working with clay.

Through the production of objects utilising a broad range of studio materials and equipment, our students engage in a ‘hands on’ exploration of the traditions of this ancient craft and its contemporary possibilities.

Our Ceramics studios are among the best equipped in Australia and support production across the entire temperature spectrum of ceramics from raku to porcelain. Students have access to production in a broad range of studio processes including hand building, wheel-throwing and casting techniques under the guidance of expert staff

NAS is a practitioner’s art school. Our teaching staff are distinguished practicing artists and art historians. We use a studio-based model of learning that integrates history and theory with the practicalities of process and technique. Our range of fully accredited degree courses are staged to nurture and guide our students through the creative and intellectual growth that creates the confidence and independence needed to be a successful visual artist.

This guidance is made possible by the small class sizes. These allow one-on-one instruction and dialogue to be part of each student’s experience. Blending teaching and mentorship, the process assists each student in navigating their way towards artistic autonomy. Each course culminates with the students working independently to create a cohesive body of work in their chosen studio discipline, and participating in the NAS Graduate Exhibition upon completion.
