Digging clay from the land on which I live and transforming it into vessels for the house, garden and table gives me enormous pleasure. My studio is my happy place. Centering clay on the wheel frees my mind from thinking about all the farm jobs I should be attending to, and guides me into a meditative state where all I am focussed on is form.

I learnt to throw at Sturt in Mittagong where I was surrounded by artistic beauty – in the studio, the permanent collection, the gardens, and the gallery. I was inspired by wonderful teachers, artists in residence and my fellow potters, as well as visiting ceramicists in the Sturt winter and summer school programmes and woodfirings. After completing the ‘On Centre’ residency at La Meridiana in Italy I was ready to set up my own studio.

I have recently been experimenting with glazes that harmonise with the colour of my clay. I marvel that the same eight glazes layered over one another in various combinations, and fired in either oxidation or reduction, produce such a varied and harmonious palette. Test tiles inspired my latest range of jewellery. Plans are now underway for a larger studio on our farm at Cobbitty where we can accommodate visiting artists and facilitate workshops.
